Popup tool pricing: views, pageviews or visitors?
Popup and social proof tools price by usage, but they do not count the same thing: some count widget views, some count every pageview where their script loads, and some count unique visitors. The unit decides your bill more than the headline price, and so does what happens when you pass the limit. This guide explains each unit, gives a formula to estimate your own number, and compares entry plans with their published limits.
Key takeaway: before comparing prices, convert every plan to the same unit for your own traffic, then check what happens at the cap. A cheap plan that switches widgets off in a busy month costs more than it says.
The three units vendors bill
Widget views (or impressions) count one each time a widget is actually shown to a visitor. A page where no widget appears costs nothing. This is the unit that follows your real use most closely, because display rules (pages, triggers, frequency) directly lower it.
Pageviews count every page load where the tool's script runs, whether a widget appears or not. A blog with 300,000 monthly pageviews uses 300,000 even if the popup only shows on 10% of them.
Unique visitors count people (usually a browser over 30 days). Numbers look smaller, but each visitor can see several widgets on several pages, and the count depends on how the vendor defines a visitor, which is rarely published in detail.
Estimate your own number in two minutes
Open your analytics for the last full month and write down three figures: pageviews, unique visitors, and the share of pages where a widget should appear. Then apply the formula that matches each vendor's unit.
- Pageview-based plans: your monthly pageviews on every page that loads the script. If the script is installed site-wide, that is your total pageviews.
- View or impression-based plans: pageviews on targeted pages x the share of those pages where the trigger fires x how many widgets show per page. A popup shown once per session, on 40% of pages, after a scroll, often uses a fraction of your pageviews.
- Visitor-based plans: your unique visitors, then add a margin: seasonal peaks and campaign traffic push this number up first.
Example: a store with 200,000 pageviews, a popup on half of its pages shown once per session, and a small social proof toast on product pages could use around 60,000 to 90,000 impressions, against 200,000 on a pageview plan. Your figures will differ: measure, then size the plan with a 30% margin for your best month.
What happens when you pass the limit
This is the question most pricing pages answer in small print, and it matters more than the price. Three patterns exist:
- Widgets stop. Your popups and proof disappear until the next billing cycle. Getsitecontrol states this on its pricing page. It is the worst outcome in a sale or a viral week, exactly when the traffic is worth the most.
- Overage fees. The tool keeps working and bills extra blocks. Popupsmart charges $10 per extra 10,000 pageviews when auto-extend is on.
- Soft cap. Widgets keep showing, and you are told you passed the allowance. GrowthTools Pro and Agency work this way: no switch-off, no overage fee, one email that month.
Entry plans compared
| Entry paid plan | Price / month | Included each month | Sites | Past the limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GrowthTools Pro | $12, or $10 billed yearly | 500,000 impressions | 25 | Widgets keep showing, no extra charge |
| Getsitecontrol Pro | $19 | 100,000 widget views | Priced per site | Widgets stop until next month |
| Popupsmart Basic | $39, or $32.50 billed yearly | 50,000 pageviews | 3 | $10 per extra 10,000 pageviews (auto-extend) |
| Poptin Basic | $25 billed yearly | 10,000 visitors | 1 | Not published |

The units differ, so read the table with your own estimate from the previous section, not as a ranking. If your traffic is visitor-heavy but light on pageviews, a visitor plan can still be the better buy.

- What exactly is counted? A view, a pageview where the script loads, or a visitor, and over which period.
- What happens at the limit? Stop, overage or soft cap, and whether you are warned before it happens.
- Are sites limited separately? Some plans price per site, which changes the math for agencies.
- Which features sit on higher tiers? Branding removal, A/B tests and integrations are common upsells.
- What does a yearly plan lock in? First-year discounts that renew at full price change the real cost over two years.

Questions
A widget view (or impression) counts one each time a widget is actually shown. A pageview counts every page load where the tool's script runs, even when no widget appears. With targeted display rules, impressions are usually a fraction of pageviews, so the same traffic costs less on an impression-based plan.
Take your monthly pageviews on the pages where widgets will run, multiply by the share of those pages where the trigger fires, then by the number of widgets shown per page. Add a 30% margin for your busiest month, since sales and campaigns raise traffic first.
It depends on the vendor. Some stop showing widgets until the next billing cycle, some bill overage blocks, and some use a soft cap that keeps widgets running. Check this on the pricing page or ask support before you buy.
On the free plan, widgets pause at 10,000 impressions and come back on the first of the month. On Pro (500,000 impressions) and Agency (1,000,000 impressions), widgets keep showing past the allowance with no extra charge, and you get one email that month.
